This week, Mentia commenced pilot testing of its new dementia care training video game, CarePlay, with three Alzheimer’s New Zealand partner organisations: Dovida, CHT Beachhaven Care Home, and Kumeu Village.
Each organisation is trialling the interactive training tool with their care teams as part of a national initiative to innovate dementia education.
The first results from the pilot at Kumeu are in, with staff commenting, “It’s changed how I work”; “It gets you thinking and sparks discussion” and “You question your own approach. That’s a good thing.”
Full pilot completion is expected in August, with a national launch by Alzheimer’s New Zealand and Mentia slated shortly after.
Caroline Bartle, Dementia Learning Center Director at Alzheimer’s New Zealand, recently discussed the pilot on her podcast, highlighting CarePlay as a key part of the organisation’s evolving education offering.
CarePlay combines interactive storytelling and real-world care scenarios to support frontline staff in learning how to respond compassionately and effectively to people living with dementia.
